Does pressure washing damage siding?

It can. High pressure on vinyl, wood or fiber-cement siding can force water behind the boards, strip paint, and leave permanent wand marks. That's why houses get a soft wash: a low-pressure application of a cleaning solution that kills the algae, mildew and moss on contact, followed by a gentle rinse. The dirt lets go on its own; the pressure never gets near what would hurt the siding.

Before we start

Close the windows, bring in anything you don't want wet, and point out any spots you're worried about. Plants and landscaping get pre-wet and rinsed after — the cleaning solutions used are diluted and rinsed down, and anything sensitive gets covered. Pets inside for an hour or two is the easiest plan.

How often should a house be washed in Western Washington?

In most of the country, every two to three years. On the Harbor, with our rain and shade, every one to two years keeps the north side of the house from going green — and it's a lot cheaper than repainting early. Pairing a house wash with a roof moss treatment on the same visit saves a setup fee.
